DRDGOLD SA Operations (Pty) Limited was formed in 2005 to consolidate DRDGOLD Limited’s operations in South Africa, and to position it for further growth within the country. The origins of parent company DRDGOLD are in South Africa where it was established more than a century ago to exploit the Witwatersrand Basin, the world’s richest known gold deposit.
In another significant development in 2005, DRDGOLD’s black empowerment partner, Khumo Bathong Holdings (Pty) Limited (KBH), acquired 15% of DRDGOLD SA making the company compliant in terms of the current Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) ownership requirement as set out in the South African Mining Charter. In September 2007 Khumo Gold increased its shareholding to 20% and facilitated the acquisition of a further 6% by the DRDGOLD SA Employee Trust. As a result of these acquisitions, DRD has already complied with the South African Mining Charter Scorecard’s 2014 target for BEE equity participation at operational level.
All DRDGOLD’s current operations have been amalgamated and acquired since 1997.
