Scope of the report

This annual Sustainable Development Report covers the 2010 financial year, from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010, and reports on the group’s broader impacts on society – economic, social and environmental – during this period. It is presented in conjunction with the company’s Annual Report, which is available both in a printed format and on the website at www.drdgold.com.

With respect to the company’s activities, it should be noted that:

  • DRDGOLD acquired Mintails’ remaining 50% interest in Ergo Mining (Pty) Limited (Ergo) during the 2010 financial year for a total consideration of R82.1 million. This transaction was the next step in the company’s strategy to expand its surface tailings reclamation footprint and exploit synergies with the Crown surface retreatment operations. Gaining access to the second carbon-in-leach circuit at Ergo’s plant provides an opportunity for DRDGOLD to double its volume capacity;
  • a new, 50-kilometre pipeline, currently under construction and scheduled for completion by August 2011, will link two of the plants of Crown Gold Recoveries (Pty) Limited (Crown) with Ergo. This will provide Crown with increased tailings deposition capacity – a constraint in recent times – and thus the potential to extend its life by bringing to account further surface tailings resources on the western and central Witwatersrand;
  • ERPM’s Cason surface retreatment operation, which is being processed through Crown’s Knights plant continues. No underground mining has taken place since October 2008. During the fourth quarter of the 2010 financial year its surface circuit was incorporated, for reporting purposes, into Crown; and
  • DRDGOLD made an initial modest investment to establish an exploration project in Zimbabwe’s highly prospective greenstone gold mining belt, in collaboration with a local partner.

The Sustainable Development Report has been compiled in line with the G3 guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the Broad-based Socio-economic Empowerment Charter for the South African Mining Industry (the Mining Charter). For this report, DRDGOLD has declared a C level of reporting in accordance with GRI’s requirements for a self-declaration in this respect.
